Jokes from China every day

The goal of Chinalols is simple: to translate a Chinese joke into English every day.

Humor is hard to translate, so maybe we won’t always get it right, but we’ll do our best. Humor is also culturally specific, so jokes might not always seem funny even if translations are correct.

We welcome you to read and comment on the jokes. If you find a mistake or think something could be better translated, let us know!

Our first post is case in point! Is it really funny that sex work is so endemic in China that the girlfriend can just assume there will be prostitutes in the bar? Nope. But we expect these translations to reveal all sorts of things about the realities of China to our readers.

Another note about the source of these jokes… they’re currently coming mainly from random collections of jokes that float around Chinese social networks. Definitely keep that demographic in mind while you read the jokes.
